How To Achieve Happiness
In these difficult times, I think its a good idea to revisit the topic of Happiness. What makes us happy? What can we do to become happier? Is it impossible given what is going on these days? I found this really good article at one of my favorite blogs, Get Rich Slowly. Its a simple guide to 13 Steps to a Better Life. I have a few on the list that need some attention. Let’s hope it helps!
The Associate
Just finished reading The Associate by John Grisham. I haven’t read a Grisham book in a long time. I had moved over to James Patterson – thank to my dad. But I picked up a copy of the Associate at the local library and read through it very quickly. The book is about a Yale Law School student who is influenced to impact a major Federal case from inside the world’s largest law firm. It is set in downtown Manhattan, on Broad Street, which provides a nice point of interest for me since I worked on Broad Street for so many years.
I enjoyed the book – it has the usual Grisham style of keeping you turning page after page, long after you were supposed to get up and do something else. The ending is a little disappointing however, as the true story of what happenned is not told. Just left to your imagination. But overall the book is certainly worth a read if you are a fan of Grisham’s prior legal mysteries.
Is Prostate Cancer Screening A Good Thing?
An article in the New York Times states that a study of 77,000 American men found that those who received annual PSA blood tests for prostate cancer did not have a reduced rate of death. Combined with a European study, the PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test is now being questioned as an effective test for men. Many cases of prostate cancer grow slowly. So slowly in fact as to never be a health issue. The PSA test does what it is supposed to do, but it causes these slow growing cancers to be found early, leading to biopsies and treatment that have major side effects. More studies need to be undertaken but these new studies help inform men that dealing with PSA testing is not as straightforward as once thought.
Happy Birthday Sam!!
Creating a Budget
In these crazy financial times, we’ve been reviewing our spending and trying to find good techniques to manage everything. One topic of interest is budgeting. There are a number of ways to set a budget of course. Everyone needs to find a method that works for them.
Here are a few articles discussing budgets that I found useful:
How To Create A Zero-Based Budget
How To Build Your First Budget
The Ten-Minute Budget advocates (and supplies) a spreadsheet to capture current spending. You can also use services like Mint.com to do the same with less manual work.
Longest Soccer Goal
This is definitely the longest goal I’ver ever seen in a soccer game!

New Service to Make Twitter Emails More Useful
Tired of getting those less than useful emails from Twitter telling you that you have a new person following you? There isn’t any additional information. You have to go to Twitter, check out the person and see if you might be interested in following them. A new service called Twimailer will change all that. It sends you an email with all the relevant info about the person. The email also has a link to make it easy to follow the person. Give it a try!
