Man’s Best Friend or Colonoscopy?

Sounds crazy, I know, but The Epoch Times refers to a recent report in a medical journal that in fact a dog can tell when a colonoscopy is required. Read about it here.

One Company Takes the Right Approach to Health Care

Just catching up on my reading and I found this great Op Ed in the Wall Street Journal by the CEO of SafeWay.  Basically he gives you all the great ideas that were implemented at his company to reduce costs and improve the health of his employees.  Wish we had more companies take this approach.

Is the American Diet the Real Problem with Healthcare?

Here is a very interesting article by Michael Pollan of the New York Times discussing that the real issue with the US healthcare system is the American diet.  He makes some excellent points.  It would be very interesting to see if pressure to change the average American diet grows quickly once health insurance companies must provide equal coverage for all.

End of Life Decisions

In her Wall Street Journal article “Preparing for the Final Hours”, Melinda Beck discusses end of life decisions and how to prepare for them.

“Forget about the health-reform debate for the moment. Should you have a living will specifying the kind of care you’d want at the end of life if you couldn’t speak for yourself?”

This is a really important article for everyone, but especially those who are older. It’s important to get things ready at an age where you can still decide how you’d like to be taken care of when you can’t make your own decisions any more.  The article discusses getting an advanced directive in place and provides links to The Caring Connections web site and the Five Wishes web site, where the forms are available.

How To Achieve Happiness

In these difficult times, I think its a good idea to revisit the topic of Happiness.  What makes us happy?  What can we do to become happier?  Is it impossible given what is going on these days?  I found this really good article at one of my favorite blogs,  Get Rich Slowly.  Its a simple guide to 13 Steps to a Better Life.  I have a few on the list that need some attention.  Let’s hope it helps!

Is Prostate Cancer Screening A Good Thing?

An article in the New York Times states that a study of 77,000 American men found that those who received annual PSA blood tests for prostate cancer did not have a reduced rate of death.  Combined with a European study, the PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test is now being questioned as an effective test for men.  Many cases of prostate cancer grow slowly.  So slowly in fact as to never be a health issue.  The PSA test does what it is supposed to do, but it causes these slow growing cancers to be found early, leading to biopsies and treatment that have major side effects.   More studies need to be undertaken but these new studies help inform men that dealing with PSA testing is not as straightforward as once thought.
